Carlsberg, anyone?

Apparently, Carlsberg and football go hand in hand.

Orange Trees

Quite a few streets in the center are lined with orange trees. They're lovely and full of fruit at the moment. It's so nice to see colour during these grey winter months.

Tel Aviv Museum of Art

I liked the view of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art through this sculpture. Isn't the sculpture great?!

Another Old Building

OK, it's a bit dilapidated, I know. But I really like the arch windows and the shutters. It has quite a bit of character.

One Foggy Morning

Today was forecast to be 22+ degrees celsius. But when I woke up this morning and looked out expecting to see blue skies, this is what I saw. Fog! But it cleared up within an hour and it's a lovely day (blue skies and all) and is very warm. Ah, Tel Aviv winters - got to love 'em!

Who Let the Goths Out?

We have a new Gothic clothing store in town. I didn't even know that the Gothic look was back!! :-)

Zodiac Mosaic

In response to Felicia's request on my post of 16 January, the Wishing Bridge, here is a photo of the zodiac mosaic in Jaffa. I couldn't get the whole zodiac in as it's huge. But I'll go back some time soon and try. In the meantime, I hope this suffices.

Dizengoff Center

Dizengoff is the heart of Tel Aviv. Dizengoff center was Tel Aviv's first shopping center built in 1977. It's still going strong and is especially busy on Thursdays and Fridays when the bottom floor is turned into a huge food fair. Glitter Loo Seat, Anyone?

Apparently, these are all the rage! I passed about 4 different bathroom shops advertising glitter loo seats. Oh, and they're available in gold too. Think Liberace...

Enjoying the Winter Sun

Here's a woodpecker stretching his wings and warming himself in the winter sun. I just thought he was cute.

The Wishing Bridge

There's a bridge in Jaffa called the Wishing Bridge. Legend has it that if you stand on the bridge, holding your zodiac sign, facing the sea, your wish will come true. There's a mosaic with all the signs of the zodiac nearby - where you can make your wish.

A Wannabe Fruity Herby

Well, what do we have here??? A "wannabe Herby" - see my post from last Tuesday . Obviously the owner of this car can't bear the idea of driving around in a fruity car and so just drapes some fruity wallpaper over it during the day! Tutti-fruity by day, white jallopy by night.

Jaffa at Sunset

Jaffa is a very old port town which is part of Tel Aviv. It is really beautiful and has lots of old roads and buildings. For more detailed information on Jaffa: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaffa,_Israel

Breakfast in Shenkin

Shenkin Street is a very trendy street near the shuk (market) with some lovely restaurants. In Israel, breakfast comes with a huge salad! It's quite strange getting used to having vegetables for breakfast. But after a while you long for salads at breakfast time. The first photo is a cup of tea with nana (mint leaves) - another unusual item in Israel that one gets used to. Actually, it's quite refreshing.

White City - Olive Tree

Part II of the White City sculptures. This sculpture is a white dome with an olive tree growing through the center - very unusual.

The White City

The White City (Kikar Levana) is an environmental sculpture by Dani Karavan that sits in a park at the highest point in Tel Aviv (for more detailed information: http://www.gemsinisrael.com/e_article000047912.htm). Over the next few days I will post a series of photos of these amazing sculptures.

Not Quite Trafalgar Square

I was walking down King George Road this morning, when I looked down an alleyway and noticed this lion next to an old apartment block. I've never seen it before - shows how observant I am. I asked a couple of people in the vicinity who put the lion there and why and they explained that an artist used to live in the apartments and he constructed the lion. It was to represent a symbolic period of time for him.

I also found a coffee/book shop next door too. Perfect for chilly days.

7 January, 2007

This is a quiet little neighbourhood in Tel Aviv. It is winter here at the moment and it has been raining for the last three days. It is nice having some rain for a change. Everything feels so clean and green.
